Remember When: The Great Dream Home Lottery
“Support the Lottery that supports Oakville”
In the spring of 1998, the Oakville Community Foundation partnered with the Great Dream Home Lottery. The lottery promised cash, cars and fabulous trips in exchange for supporting a variety of initiatives within the Oakville community.
At the time, the Great Dream Home Lottery was the only volunteer-driven super lottery operating in the Greater Toronto Area and, as a result, was able to maximize the revenue turned over to charity.
Along with improving Oakville for the better, the lottery itself was all about building community partnerships. The majority of major sponsors and committee members had been with the project since inception. Oakville’s own Peter Gilgan lent Mattamy Homes as the builder of the Dream Home, providing much volunteer time and talent.
Over the six years the Great Dream Home Lottery ran in partnership with the Oakville Community Foundation, they raised money for a variety of causes including: cardio rehabilitation equipment for the YMCA, scholarships and bursaries to Sheridan College and donations to The Foundation’s Youth in Recreation Fund.
Though The Great Dream Lottery ended in 2004, its impact did not. The Foundation is still committed to the same values it was then. In our 25th year, we are more devoted than ever to connecting people with causes that inspire them, and ensuring that Oakvile is the best place it can be.
