While horse riding on a trail with her mother on September 21st, 2020, our fiercely brave daughter, Zara, became trapped in a marshy bog. In her struggle to save her beloved horse, Monkey, Zara tragically lost her life. After her passing, the outpouring of support and love from people around the world was astounding. Though only 14, Zara had a tremendous impact on everyone. Her innate kindness, her drive for excellence, her passionate love of animals, and dedication to her horse and the sport of Eventing, drew people to her.
Many had asked how they could pay tribute to Zara with donations, and the giving began with over $6500.00 donated to the Oakville Milton Humane Society and other animal shelters. At the same time, the Ontario Eventing Association proposed an annual award to honour Zara’s memory and we were inspired to think big, just as she did. With the purpose of creating the Zara Buren Memorial Foundation, we started a GoFundMe campaign 3 days after her death that surpassed its $100,000 goal in 9 days. With this incredible generosity, we have created a Foundation that will focus on helping youth with the desire, talent and work ethic to pursue their passion. Zara was an extraordinary child and exceptional athlete who gave love and kindness to every human and animal she encountered. She is missed beyond measure.
Please join us in honouring Zara’s legacy by making a donation and helping us continue to make a difference in the lives of young people.
