Numerous research studies have identified the alarming prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their resulting negative impact on a child’s ability to thrive as an adult. ACEs include physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse, neglect, street and/or domestic violence, caregiver absence, and caregiver mental illness.
BBBS fills a gap in our community by working directly with young people to provide proactive and preventative solutions that reduce and ameliorate the negative effects of toxic stress, caused by ACEs. BBBS interventions utilize the Search Institute’s® 40 Developmental Assets framework; which identifies a set of skills, experiences, relationships, and behaviours that are important for young people to succeed.
